The Green Economy

The climate is changing and so is the economy. Taking action on climate change will bring about economic opportunities in many green sectors.

The Green Economy

While climate change will present significant risks, taking action on climate change also has the potential to generate important economic opportunities, including:

  • Clean Energy Development - As the majority of greenhouse gas emissions come from the combustion of fossil fuels to generate energy, there is an increasing demand for clean, renewable energy sources. Newfoundland and Labrador is a clean energy warehouse with resources such as the Lower Churchill Hydroelectric Project, and energy exports can generate significant revenue.
  • Technology Development - Technological innovation is needed to develop solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the demand for environmentally friendly products and services is growing. Capitalizing on this demand can help grow our province's share of the global green economy.
  • Job Growth - The demand for clean energy development and technological innovation in response to climate change can generate new job opportunities. A study commissioned by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador in 2010 found that, with the right support, employment in the green economy could grow by 30% by 2020.
  • Energy Efficiency - Improving energy efficiency can help tackle climate change while lowering fuel bills for homeowners and improving businesses' competitiveness by lowering operating costs.
