Corner Brook's Green City Hall

Corner Brook City Hall has achieved one of the highest environmental standards for buildings.

Corner Brook's Green City Hall

The City Hall in Corner Brook has achieved Silver certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. This is one of the highest environmental standards for buildings. Projects that achieve this certification are on the cutting edge of sustainable building practices.

The City Hall incorporated several environmental features to reach this standard, including:

  • A green roof that has various types of vegetation, which provides natural air conditioning for the building and an outdoor leisure space for staff and visitors;
  • Several energy-efficient features, including energy-efficient windows and lighting, as well as low-flow plumbing fixtures and a geothermal heating system; and
  • A "Windows on the World" (WOW) system that displays the building's energy performance in the lobby and allows staff and visitors to learn about how much energy the building is saving.

This innovative project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 500 tonnes per year, which is equal to taking over 100 cars off the road.
