Greening Government
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador recognizes there are many benefits associated with improving the environmental sustainability of its operations. Saving energy has the potential to lower operating costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which is an important step in addressing climate change. Additionally, increasing the demand for environmentally preferable products and services can generate new business opportunities in the province.
Greening Government Action Plan
In January 2015, the Provincial Government released its Greening Government Action Plan. The goal of this five-year plan is to create a culture of environmental sustainability with the Provincial Government's core operations. To achieve this goal, the plan outlines 46 across five strategic objectives:
- Increasing waste diversion;
- Improving the sustainability of government buildings;
- Integrating green considerations into transportation decisions;
- Increasing the procurement of environmentally preferable products and services; and
- Effectively engaging employees on each of these issues.
The Greening Government Action Plan builds upon successes to date towards improving the environmental sustainability of government's operations. These successes are highlighted throughout the plan, which also includes actions such as constructing new government buildings to meet environmental standards, incorporating fuel-efficient vehicles into government's fleet, and enhancing training and other resources to support green procurement.
